Patrick Ewing Junior was born on May 20, 1984 around the time that his famous father was graduating from college at Georgetown University. Interestingly, the birth of Patrick Ewing Jr. occurred right between his father (who shares the same name) being named a first team All-American college basketball player and winning an Olympic gold medal with the 1984 United States basketball team in the Olympic games that were held in Los Angeles.
Ewing Junior, born in Boston, Massachusetts, attended college preparatory schools in New York, Georgia, and Maryland before deciding to attend Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. On May 1, 2003 as a senior in high school at National Christian Academy in Maryland Ewing formally committed to playing college basketball as an Indiana Hoosier. Although his father was a renowned 7 foot center with an 8 foot wingspan Ewing Jr. plays the power forward position as a 6'8" player in a game increasing filled with taller players from one generation to the next.
University
After playing for two years with Indiana University Patrick Ewing Junior decided to transfer to the same college that his father attended. In 2005 Ewing Jr. transferred from Indiana University to Georgetown University in Washington D.C. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules dictate that athletes transferring from one Division-I college to another Division-I college must first sit out a year before resuming competition. The purpose of this rule is believed to primarily be to discourage excessive transferring. The NCAA transfer rule is fairly effective at achieving this result.
After sitting out for the 2005-2006 college basketball season while attending classes at Georgetown University Ewing Jr. came back for the 2006-2007 season and was an effective contributor for a formidable Georgetown Hoyas team. As a proud member of the Georgetown basketball program Ewing Jr. wore number 33, the same number that his father wore on his jersey more than twenty years earlier. While wearing number 33 during his senior season Patrick Ewing Junior came off the bench for the Hoyas and averaged 6.1 points a game. Despite minimal statistical production on the court Ewing Junior was honored with the Big East Conference Sixth Man of the Year award. An interesting piece of trivia is that when Patrick Ewing Junior played basketball at Georgetown his head coach, John Thompson III, was the son of the man that coached his father at the exact same school two decades earlier.
Despite being taken with the 43rd pick in the 2008 NBA Draft the professional basketball career of Patrick Ewing Junior looks uncertain as he has already been sidetracked by injuries. Regardless of how the rest of his basketball career turns out many onlookers would agree that Patrick Ewing Junior has already achieved a great deal of success when considering the additional burden the pressure of being the son of an iconic star has had on his life.
